About dotwork tattoo

Dotwork (pointillism) is tattoo made entirely of DOTS — no lines, no solid fills. Dot density creates shading: many = black, sparse = gray, absence = white. Origin in Polynesian traditional + revival via Xed Le Head, Tomas Tomas. Technique demands extreme patience — dotwork sleeve can take 80-120 hours. Dotwork stencil is COMPOSITION + DENSITY GUIDE, not line. Decalker generates base structure + areas marked for high/low density. You decide the dot rhythm on skin.

Defining characteristics

How Decalker preserves the dotwork linework

Decalker doesn't generate dotwork directly — generates line you use as composition GUIDE. For pure dotwork, generate structure via Contour, then Refinar with 'convert filled areas to dotwork density gradient'. In practice, many dotwork artists prefer drawing dot stencil manually. Decalker is more useful for dotwork+geometric (generates mandala stencil, you fill with dots).

Contour

Contour produces clean base structure that you use as guide to fill with dots manually. Anime would be too thick.

FAQs: Dotwork on Decalker

Why is dotwork session so long?+
Each dot is made INDIVIDUALLY — needle in, out, in again. Full sleeve can have 50,000-100,000 dots. Even at 1 dot/second (super fast), 80h for 100k dots. Realism, in comparison, makes continuous 'passes' — much faster.
Does dotwork last longer than color?+
Yes — saturated black dots last 15+ years. Color fades much more. That's why many dotwork purists avoid color: want piece to last. Bonus: dotwork ages well visually — slight fade becomes part of texture.
What needle for dotwork?+
Single-needle round liner (1RL) is standard. 3RL for larger dots (background). Premium cartridge (Cheyenne, Bishop) — cheap needle spreads dot into blob. Depth 1.2-1.5mm, don't 'drag' needle.
Does Decalker really do dotwork?+
Directly, no — output is line, not dots. Use as structural GUIDE: print stencil via Decalker, then fill with dots manually. Future plan: Decalker may add 'dotwork mode' converting filled areas to dot density gradient. In development.
Does dotwork work on dark skin?+
Yes — saturated black ink dots are visible on dark skin (more than color). Sweet spot: high contrast areas (full sleeve on black skin with dotwork = potent visual statement). Avoid very low density on dark skin — dots would disappear.
