How to use thermal tattoo printer (Phomemo, HPRT, Brother)

Time:5 minutes (30 min initial setup)Difficulty:Beginner

TL;DR

Phomemo M08F $80 = sweet spot for 90% of artists. Turn on Bluetooth, install 80mm thermal tattoo paper, connect via Phomemo app on phone, open Decalker PDF, print at 'Actual size / 100%'. Stencil ready in 30 seconds.

Materials needed

Step by step

1. Buy printer matching your volume

1-5 stencils/week: Phomemo M08F ($80, 300dpi, mobile-only). 5-15/week: HPRT MT660 ($140, better durability). >15/week or 3+ artist studio: Brother PJ-883 ($300, A4, professional). Always confirm 300dpi minimum (200dpi works but fine lines disappear).

2. Charge battery + install paper

Phomemo M08F: USB-C cable, 1.5h full charge. Open back cover, insert 80mm thermal paper roll with PRINTABLE side up (shiny light-black side, not opaque side). Close cover, paper auto-feeds a few cm.

3. Turn on Bluetooth and download app

Phomemo: hold power button 3 seconds. Green LED on. On phone, go to Settings > Bluetooth and pair with 'M08F-XXXX'. Download 'Phomemo Print' (App Store or Play Store), open, app auto-detects paired printer.

4. Generate stencil in Decalker

Open decalker.com on phone -> Decalkar -> upload photo -> choose Contour style -> wait 5 seconds -> download 1:1mm PDF ('PDF 1:1' button on result page). PDF saves to phone Downloads automatically.

5. Open PDF in printer app

Phomemo Print app > 'Print Document' > choose Decalker PDF from Downloads. Preview appears. CRITICAL: size config must be 'Actual size' or '100%' — NEVER 'Fit to page' or 'Auto fit' (these resize and lose 1:1mm scale you need for tattooing).

6. Print and check result

Tap 'Print'. Printer pulls paper automatically, prints in ~30 seconds. Stencil comes out black on white, sharp lines. Check: no streaks, smudges, missing lines? If OK, separate paper tearing at built-in guillotine (Phomemo) or cutting straight.

Common mistakes

Decalker shortcut

Decalker exports 1:1mm PDF ready for thermal printer — no manual size config. 'PDF 1:1' button on Decalker result page = direct print compatible. You focus on tattooing, not troubleshooting printer.

FAQs

Is Phomemo M08F worth it for beginner?+
Yes — $80 pays off in 2 months for beginner (vs spending $$ on Spirit hectographic paper repeatedly). Plus: mobile-first workflow is natural for novice artist. M08F is the right entry level.
How long does thermal tattoo paper last?+
Thermal stencil stays visible ~6-12 months stored in indirect light. If tattooing same day, no issue. For future client storage, avoid direct sunlight + high humidity.
Bluetooth doesn't connect — solution?+
Typical: 1) Reset Phomemo (hold power 5s until off and back on), 2) 'Forget' printer in phone Bluetooth and pair again, 3) Confirm using correct app (Phomemo Print, not generic). If persists, contact Phomemo support.
Does thermal print colored image?+
No — thermal ALWAYS prints black-on-white (thermal paper reacts only to heat, no cartridge). Tattoo stencil is typically B&W anyway. For color, apply directly on skin with colored ink.
Does Decalker work with Phomemo app?+
Yes — flow: Decalker generates PDF -> saves to phone Downloads -> Phomemo app imports PDF -> prints. No direct API integration but PDF intermediary works. Workflow takes 60 seconds total (5s gen + 30s upload + 30s print).
